Medical professional preparing quick immunotherapy injection for cancer patient in hospital setting

NHS Cancer Jab Saves 100,000 Hours of Treatment Time

🤯 Mind Blown

A new one-minute cancer treatment is replacing two-hour hospital sessions for 14,000 patients across England. The breakthrough immunotherapy injection frees patients to live their lives while helping the NHS treat more people faster.

Cancer patients across England are getting their time back thanks to a revolutionary immunotherapy that takes just one minute to administer instead of two hours.

The injectable form of pembrolizumab treats nearly 30 types of cancer and works by blocking a protein that normally stops the immune system from attacking cancer cells. Once that brake is released, the body can recognize and destroy cancer cells on its own.

For 14,000 patients currently receiving this treatment, the change is life-altering. The old version required sitting in a hospital chair for about two hours while the drug dripped slowly through an IV in a specialist clean room. The new injection takes one to two minutes depending on whether it's given every three or six weeks.

Shirley Xerxes, 89, from St Albans was among the first to receive the new treatment. "I can't believe how little time it took," she said. "I was only in the chair for a matter of minutes instead of an hour or more. It's made such a difference and gives me more time to live my life, including spending more time gardening."

The Ripple Effect

The time savings extend far beyond individual patients. The NHS will save more than 100,000 hours of preparation and treatment time each year, freeing up appointments for other patients who need care.

Combined with nivolumab, another quick immunotherapy injection approved last year for 15,000 patients, the NHS now offers fast-acting treatments for almost 30 cancer types. These innovations mean clinical teams can help more people while patients spend less time tethered to hospital chairs.

Prof Peter Johnson, NHS national clinical director for cancer, called the treatment "a lifeline for thousands of patients." He emphasized that managing cancer treatment and regular hospital trips can be exhausting, and this innovation lets patients get back to living their lives.

University hospitals Bristol and Weston and East and North Hertfordshire teaching NHS trust are leading the rollout, with more hospitals expected to follow.

The shift represents a fundamental change in how cancer care works: shorter visits, better outcomes, and more time for what matters most.
