Niagara Jobs Rebound: Unemployment Drops to 7.2%

😊 Feel Good

After two months of rising unemployment, Niagara's job market bounced back in March with more people working and businesses posting nearly 20% more job openings. The turnaround signals renewed confidence as employers gear up for the busy season ahead.

Niagara's job market is heating up just in time for spring, with unemployment falling and businesses scrambling to fill thousands of new positions.

The region's unemployment rate dropped to 7.2% in March, down from 7.7% the previous month. That half-point improvement reversed two straight months of increases and put more than 900 new residents to work.

"Niagara saw overall improvements in March, with lower unemployment and rising employment, alongside a notable increase in job postings signaling renewed employer demand," said Thalia Semplonius, co-executive director of Workforce Collective, which tracks the region's employment data.

The real story shows up in hiring trends. Businesses posted 3,416 new job openings in March, up nearly 20% from February's 2,852 postings.

Retail stores led the charge with 674 new positions, followed by schools with 484 openings. Restaurants, hotels, healthcare facilities, and manufacturers also ramped up recruitment as seasonal demand picked up.

The gains weren't evenly distributed across all groups. Men saw their unemployment rate plunge 1.4 percentage points while employment rose 1%. Women experienced smaller improvements, with unemployment dipping just 0.6 points.

Youth workers faced headwinds, with both participation and employment rates slipping in March. Their participation rate fell from 64.6% at the year's start to 62.7% last month.

The Bright Side

Niagara's turnaround stands out against broader trends. While the region's unemployment fell, Canada's rate ticked up to 7% and Ontario's climbed to 7.6%.

The employment rate jumped to 54.5%, driven by strong growth in service industries that rose 1.3%. That growth more than offset a 2.4% decline in goods-producing jobs.

March marked the third consecutive month of rising job postings, suggesting employers see brighter days ahead. The region's population grew by 900 people during the month, showing Niagara continues attracting new residents even as it works to get more people into the workforce.

With spring here and summer approaching, the momentum in service sectors points to businesses preparing for their busiest months.
