NICU Baby Given Zero Chance Now Becomes Neonatal Nurse

Twenty-nine years after doctors told her parents to say goodbye three separate times, Angel Self is walking across a graduation stage with one clear mission: to become the kind of neonatal nurse her mother desperately needed.

Angel's story began with tragedy on August 23, 1997, at Indiana University Hospital. Her mother Desiree Self was in active labor when a nurse left her bedside despite strict orders to stay, dismissing Desiree's pleas that the baby was coming. A passing woman noticed the emergency and discovered Angel's head had already been delivered.

The baby arrived cold, blue, and lifeless. "My daughter was black, like a leather jacket," Desiree recalled. "My baby was dead."

Medical teams rushed Angel to Riley Hospital for Children and placed her on ECMO, the highest form of life support that completely takes over heart and lung function. Born with two holes in her heart, she underwent two major bypass surgeries while doctors approached her parents three times recommending they disconnect the machines.

Even if she survived, medical staff warned, Angel would face severe brain damage, need a wheelchair, and have no quality of life. For months, her parents could only stand beside her bed and watch, forbidden from holding their daughter.

Then Desiree noticed something: Angel's tiny foot moved. She was waking up.

Angel didn't just survive. She thrived. Today she's a healthy mother of two children, preparing to graduate from nursing school with her sights set on neonatal intensive care. She plans to carry her surgical scars into hospital units as living proof that miracles happen.

"I know I am not perfect, but I know I have a purpose," Angel said. "You have to go through a test to have a testimony."
