Nigeria and UK Launch Initiative to Unite Startup Hubs
Nigeria's fragmented startup ecosystem is getting a major boost through a new UK-backed program connecting innovation hubs, research centers, and support organizations across all six regions. The Nigeria Innovation Cluster Exchange launches this month to turn isolated success stories into a coordinated engine for economic growth.
Nigeria's tech startups are about to get the unified support system they've needed for years, thanks to a groundbreaking partnership between Nigeria and the United Kingdom.
The Nigeria Innovation Cluster Exchange, known as NICE, officially kicked off on July 6, 2026. The program brings together innovation hubs, research institutions, and startup support organizations that have long operated in silos across the country.
The initiative is funded by the UK-Nigeria Tech Hub under the UK Government's Digital Access Programme. The Nest Innovation Technology Park is implementing the program on the ground.
"We are moving from celebrating isolated pockets of brilliance to engineering a collective national engine for growth," said Oluwajoba Oloba, co-founder of The Nest Innovation Technology Park. He described the initiative as "activating the connective tissue Nigeria's economy has long demanded."
The problem NICE aims to solve is real and costly. Despite rapid growth in fintech, agritech, cybersecurity, and health technology, Nigerian startups face weak survival rates because support organizations rarely coordinate their efforts. Duplicate programs and scattered resources have made it harder for young businesses to thrive.

The program's pilot phase will map and connect innovation clusters in all six of Nigeria's geopolitical zones. This national database will help investors, policymakers, and development partners identify opportunities and gaps more easily.
NICE also creates direct knowledge exchanges with UK innovation clusters through expert residency programs. Nigerian entrepreneurs will access global best practices adapted to local challenges through collaborative innovation sprints focused on pressing problems.
The initiative was inspired by insights from the 2025 UK Digital Trade and Innovation Tour. Organizers studied how other countries built coordinated startup ecosystems and tailored those lessons for Nigeria's unique landscape.
The Ripple Effect
When innovation hubs work together instead of competing, everyone wins. Startups gain access to better mentorship, more funding opportunities, and specialized expertise regardless of where they're located. Investors get clearer pictures of where to deploy capital. Researchers see their work reach the market faster.
The program prioritizes sectors with massive potential for economic diversification and job creation. Agritech innovations could transform food security. Cybersecurity solutions protect growing digital economies. Health technology breakthroughs improve care for millions.
NICE includes a local stewardship model designed to keep the network thriving long after the pilot phase ends. Innovation clusters will remain self-governing while benefiting from coordinated support and shared resources.
The future looks brighter when brilliant ideas connect with the right support at the right time.
