Nigeria Army Rescues Kidnap Victim, Returns $5K Ransom

A woman abducted in Nigeria's Plateau State is back with her family tonight, and the ransom her loved ones paid has been returned in full.

Troops from Operation Enduring Peace rescued the victim from Padam Forest after tracking kidnappers across two local government areas. The military recovered 8 million naira (about $5,000 USD) that the woman's family had paid and immediately returned the money to them.

The woman was taken on April 19 from Bauna in Shendam. After arresting a suspect linked to the crime, troops interrogated him until he revealed where the kidnappers were holding her. They found her in neighboring Qua'an Pan and brought her to safety.

Military spokesperson Chinonso Oteh said the victim received medical care at a hospital in Shendam before reuniting with her family. Troops have launched follow-up operations to find other members of the kidnapping ring.

This rescue is part of a broader security push across Plateau State. In the past week alone, troops raided an illegal weapons factory in Langtang North, ambushed armed attackers in Barkin Ladi, and intercepted ammunition along the Kaduna-Jos highway.

Each operation chips away at the infrastructure that makes kidnapping possible. By targeting not just the criminals but their supply chains and safe houses, security forces are making it harder for these networks to operate.

Authorities say they're focused on intelligence gathering to prevent kidnappings before they happen. While residents continue calling for sustained security presence, these coordinated operations show a shift toward dismantling criminal networks at their roots rather than just responding to individual crimes.
