Nigeria Doubles Power Grid Capacity for 12M Residents
Nigeria is upgrading a major transmission line serving three states, more than doubling electricity capacity for millions of residents. The project includes fair compensation for affected property owners and public safety measures during construction.
Millions of Nigerians in three southeastern states are about to get more reliable electricity thanks to a major power grid upgrade that puts people first.
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), partnered with the African Development Bank, has launched a project to reconstruct the Alaoji-Onitsha transmission line. The upgrade will transform the existing single circuit line into a quad circuit configuration using advanced conductors.
The improvement will more than double the line's capacity, directly addressing the region's growing electricity demand. The transmission line serves 12 local government areas across Abia, Imo, and Anambra states.
What makes this infrastructure project stand out is its community-focused approach. TCN held sensitization programs throughout all 12 affected areas, ensuring residents understand the project timeline and their rights.
Project Manager Omobola Sobo explained that the upgraded line will significantly improve electricity supply reliability for homes and businesses. The enhanced capacity means fewer blackouts and more consistent power for schools, hospitals, and local enterprises.

The company is taking public safety seriously during construction. Assistant General Manager Aromeh Adole confirmed that all affected property owners will receive appropriate compensation following established guidelines.
TCN is working with PGM Nigeria Limited to implement a Resettlement Action Plan for anyone impacted by the construction. The plan includes clearing the transmission Right of Way safely while protecting community members.
The Ripple Effect
Better electricity infrastructure creates opportunities far beyond just keeping the lights on. Reliable power means students can study after dark, medical facilities can refrigerate vaccines, and small businesses can operate machinery consistently.
The project represents a growing trend of infrastructure development that prioritizes transparency and community engagement. By informing residents early and promising fair compensation, TCN is building trust alongside transmission lines.
For southeastern Nigeria, this upgrade could be a turning point in economic development and quality of life improvements.
