Nigeria Expands Cash Aid to 15M Families Fighting Poverty
Nigeria's government is scaling up its cash transfer program to reach 15 million vulnerable households, already supporting over 9 million families with direct financial assistance. The initiative includes special grants of ₦50,000 to help families build sustainable livelihoods.
Nigeria is bringing financial relief directly to millions of families struggling with poverty through an ambitious cash transfer program that's already changing lives across the country.
The Household Prosperity and Empowerment Cash Transfer Programme (HoPE-CT) has reached more than 9.2 million beneficiaries nationwide and aims to expand support to 15 million vulnerable households. Minister of Information Mohammed Idris announced the expansion Monday during a briefing in Abuja, calling it one of the administration's most significant social programs.
The program delivers more than monthly payments. Special uplift grants of ₦50,000 are being distributed to 3.6 million households specifically designed to strengthen income sources and accelerate families' paths out of poverty.
"This programme is about restoring hope, expanding opportunities and laying the foundation for inclusive prosperity," Idris explained. He emphasized that the initiative represents dignity and improved living conditions for citizens at the grassroots level, not just statistics on a government ledger.
The cash transfer program sits within a broader network of poverty reduction efforts. Young people and women can now access interest-free loans between ₦300,000 and ₦400,000 through cooperatives without needing collateral, removing a traditional barrier to entrepreneurship.

Students are getting help too, with over ₦95.6 billion approved through the Student Loan Scheme to support higher education. Small traders and entrepreneurs continue receiving microloans to grow their businesses, while 600,000 micro-businesses nationwide are receiving livelihood support grants.
The Ripple Effect
When families receive direct financial support, the benefits spread far beyond individual households. Parents can afford to keep children in school, local businesses see increased spending, and entire communities gain economic stability.
The government has also repositioned its school feeding program to boost enrollment while supporting local farmers who supply the meals. A consumer credit initiative backed by over ₦200 billion helps citizens purchase goods they need, and a compressed natural gas program aims to reduce transportation costs for everyone.
Skills training programs are equipping Nigerians with digital capabilities through the 3 Million Technical Talent Programme, while the Skill-Up Artisans Programme uses technology to upgrade traditional craftspeople's abilities. The LUMINAH 2030 initiative focuses specifically on empowering over one million women and girls through education and vocational training.
Idris called on media to look beyond the numbers and share real stories of transformation, highlighting how these programs restore hope in communities. Together, these initiatives are building toward what officials call inclusive prosperity where vulnerable citizens gain pathways to stability.
