Nigeria Invests $28M in Kano Airport Expansion

Nigeria just greenlit a major investment that will transform air travel for millions across West Africa. President Bola Tinubu approved ₦46 billion (roughly $28 million USD) to build and resurface a second runway at Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport, one of the country's busiest aviation hubs.

Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo announced the funding during the opening of the airport's newly remodeled domestic terminal. The project aims to boost the airport's capacity and help it compete with other major international airports across the continent.

Kano sits at the heart of Northern Nigeria's economy, serving as a commercial gateway for the region's 100 million residents. The airport already handles thousands of domestic and international passengers daily, plus seasonal surges during the annual Hajj pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia.

The second runway will dramatically improve operational efficiency and reduce flight delays. With two runways, the airport can handle more simultaneous takeoffs and landings, especially during peak travel seasons.
