Nigeria Launches 10-Day Vaccine Drive for 1 Million Kids

Over the next 10 days, health workers across Bayelsa State, Nigeria will fan out to protect more than a million children from diseases that still claim young lives.

The state launched an ambitious vaccination campaign on Monday, targeting every child between nine months and 14 years old. First Lady Gloria Diri kicked off the drive in Yenagoa, honoring the late Deputy Governor Senator Lawrence Orujakpo, who championed children's health initiatives throughout his career.

Measles and rubella remain serious threats in many Nigerian communities. These preventable diseases can cause brain damage, blindness, hearing loss, and death in children. For pregnant women, rubella infection can leave newborns with lifelong disabilities.

The campaign addresses a gap that has left too many families vulnerable. Limited healthcare access, vaccine hesitancy, and low awareness have allowed preventable illnesses to persist in remote areas of the state.

Health officials are meeting families where they are. Temporary vaccination stations have popped up in markets, schools, churches, mosques, motor parks, village squares, and waterfront communities. No child will need to travel far to receive protection.

The initiative goes beyond measles and rubella vaccines. Children aged five months to one year will also receive malaria vaccines, while nine-year-old girls can get the HPV vaccine to protect against cervical cancer later in life.

Months of preparation made this possible. Earlier in 2025, the state government worked with local leaders, religious figures, and community groups to build trust in vaccines. That groundwork created the coordination needed to reach children in even the most remote areas.

The campaign represents a partnership between the Bayelsa State Ministry of Health, the State Primary Health Care Board, and development partners committed to strengthening immunization services statewide.
