Nigeria Launches AI Academy to Train Thousands in Tech

Nigeria just took a major step toward becoming Africa's AI powerhouse with a new academy that promises free training, startup funding, and a direct path to global competition.

The Federal Ministry of Communications partnered with Meta and local tech organizations to launch an AI academy designed to transform Nigeria's technology landscape. The program will take participants from basic AI knowledge to building real, market-ready products.

Dr. Bosun Tijani, Nigeria's Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, says the initiative reflects the government's commitment to building Nigeria's AI ecosystem through smart partnerships. The goal is to strengthen the country's position in Africa's digital economy while creating opportunities for young professionals.

The academy offers three distinct pathways for participants. The skills development program provides free courses through Coursera, DeepLearning.AI and DataCamp, covering everything from generative AI to building applications with Meta's Llama models.

Top performers get real rewards. The 100 highest scorers receive scholarships for Meta Blueprint certifications and up to $5,000 in advertising credits to launch their own ventures.

The startup component targets Nigeria's growing entrepreneur community through an AI Pitchathon. Ten selected startups will pitch their ideas at GITEX Nigeria on September 3, with applications closing August 21.

Two winning startups walk away with $5,000 in cash funding each, plus $2,000 in Meta advertising credits. They'll also represent Nigeria at Meta's AI Summit in Istanbul this November, with all expenses paid.

The Ripple Effect

This partnership addresses a critical gap in Nigeria's tech ecosystem. Sade Dada, Meta's Head of Public Policy for Anglophone West Africa, notes that Nigeria already has some of Africa's most dynamic AI talent, but founders and developers need better access to practical training, funding and platforms.

The six-week Developer Bootcamp provides exactly that. Selected developers and startups receive intensive hands-on training to build functional AI products, supported by technical guidance and direct access to Meta's AI experts.

Dr. Olushola Ayoola, CEO of Robotics and Artificial Intelligence Nigeria, emphasized that building Nigeria's AI capacity requires the kind of coordinated effort this partnership represents. By bringing together government resources, global tech platforms and local expertise, the academy creates a complete support system.

The initiative builds on Nigeria's existing 3 Million Technical Talent programme, which aims to develop a pipeline of skilled professionals for the country's digital economy. Training more AI developers means Nigerian companies can rely less on expensive imported expertise while local startups gain skills needed to compete globally.
