Nigeria Launches App-Based Passport Renewal for Diaspora

Millions of Nigerians living overseas just got a major headache removed from their lives.

The Nigeria Immigration Service launched a fully contactless passport renewal system that lets eligible citizens complete the entire process from their phones. No embassy visits. No taking time off work. No travel expenses.

The system works through the NIS mobile app, which guides users through facial recognition and fingerprint scanning on their own devices. Applicants start by visiting the official passport portal and selecting the contactless option after paying their renewal fee.

Once they download the app, the technology walks them through capturing biometric data including facial images, fingerprints, and liveness verification to prove they're real people and not photos. The app checks eligibility automatically and submits everything for review.

After approval, applicants mail their current passport and printed application form to their chosen embassy in a self-addressed return envelope. Two weeks later, they can start tracking their new passport through the portal or app.

The service targets the massive Nigerian diaspora, which sends over $20 billion home annually and frequently struggles with passport logistics while living abroad. Previous systems required in-person appointments that could take months to schedule at busy embassies.

The Ripple Effect

This technology shift signals a broader modernization of Nigerian government services. When bureaucratic barriers fall, citizens save time and money while maintaining closer ties to home.

The contactless system also reduces crowding at embassies and frees up staff to handle more complex cases. Early adopters report completing renewals in weeks instead of months.

Not everyone qualifies for contactless renewal yet. Those who don't meet eligibility requirements still need physical appointments, but the NIS says expanding access remains a priority as the system proves itself.
