Nigeria Launches Community Food Banks to Help Families

Families struggling to afford food across Nigeria are getting help through a new nationwide program that brings emergency food supplies directly to communities in need.

First Lady Oluremi Tinubu will kick off the National Community Food Bank Programme on Tuesday in Ogun State, where governors and their spouses from across the country will gather to support the launch. The program aims to provide consistent food assistance to vulnerable households through community-based distribution centers.

The launch begins in Makun, Sagamu, where residents will receive food packages as part of the federal government's expanded social intervention efforts. The program builds on existing welfare initiatives to reach more families facing food insecurity.

Mrs. Tinubu's visit includes more than just food distribution. She'll commission a new 108-unit housing estate named after former President Muhammadu Buhari in Kobape, Abeokuta, providing affordable homes for local families.

The First Lady will also open the Gateway Medical Centre of Excellence, a 250-bed modern hospital in Abeokuta designed to bring advanced healthcare services to residents of Ogun State and surrounding areas. The facility addresses critical healthcare gaps in the region.
