Nigeria Launches Digital Address System for Every Citizen

Nigeria is building something most countries take for granted: a system to find every address in the nation.

Vice President Kashim Shettima announced Monday that the National Addressing Council ratified a framework to create a modern digital addressing system. The goal is simple but transformative: ensure every Nigerian household and legitimate business can be located within a trusted national framework.

"A country that cannot consistently locate its people and businesses carries an avoidable weakness into planning, commerce, security and social protection," Shettima told council members in Abuja. He emphasized that the system must serve rural villages as effectively as major cities.

The challenge is real. Without reliable addresses, millions of Nigerians face barriers to banking services, delivery of government aid, emergency medical care, and basic commerce. Businesses struggle to operate efficiently, and investors hesitate to commit resources.

Under the new framework, the Federal Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation will coordinate efforts across multiple agencies. The National Identity Management Commission will handle individual verification, while the Corporate Affairs Commission verifies business addresses. Nigeria Post maintains responsibility for postal codes and infrastructure.

The system will connect with other digital platforms including identity databases and government services. When a verified identity links securely to a verified address, the benefits extend across financial inclusion, social programs, logistics planning, and emergency response.

Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation Kingsley Udeh called it "a critical assignment that should have been done decades ago." He committed to discharging the coordination role with discipline and unity.

Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo said the initiative is "fundamental and foundational to Nigeria's economic revolution." He expressed confidence the news would restore foreign investor confidence, signaling it's "no more business as usual but business unusual."

The Ripple Effect

The impact reaches far beyond simple navigation. Local governments will drive implementation at the community level, ensuring even the most remote areas gain visibility. Association of Local Governments President Bello Lawal noted the system "will improve national security, improve citizen identification, deepen financial inclusion, change planning and revenue generation."

For entrepreneurs in villages without street names, this means access to loans, supplies, and customers. For families in emergencies, it means ambulances and police can actually find them. For the government, it means more efficient delivery of social services to those who need them most.

NIMC Director-General Abisoye Coker acknowledged early challenges from lack of coordination among agencies but thanked the Vice President's office for harmonizing all parties involved. The collaborative approach signals a new era of inter-agency cooperation focused on citizen welfare.

Nigeria is proving that geography should never sentence anyone to invisibility.
