Nigeria Launches Free Cooking Gas for Millions of Families

Millions of Nigerian mothers will soon cook dinner without breathing toxic smoke, thanks to a bold new government program launching this week.

Nigeria started distributing free cooking gas cylinders in Bayelsa State on Tuesday, marking the beginning of a state-by-state rollout that aims to reach households across the entire country. The National Grassroots LPG Penetration Programme partners the federal government with major energy companies including ExxonMobil, Dangote Group, and TotalEnergies to make clean cooking fuel accessible to every family.

The contrast is striking. Nigeria sits on over 215 trillion cubic feet of natural gas reserves, making it one of the most gas-rich nations on Earth. Yet countless families still gather firewood daily and cook over smoky fires that damage lungs and eyes, especially affecting women and children who spend hours around these stoves.

"No mother should be compelled to choose between feeding her family and protecting her health," said Ekperikpe Ekpo, Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, at the launch event. "No child should inhale harmful smoke because cleaner energy remains beyond reach."

Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State, located in Nigeria's oil-producing Niger Delta region, captured the emotional weight of the moment. "While the cities are built with money from our soil, we languish in poverty. We use firewood to cook, while they use gas from our land to cook," he said. "But today, the story is changing."

The Ripple Effect

This program does more than swap wood for gas. When mothers stop gathering firewood, girls gain hours for school instead of fuel collection. Families save money previously spent buying wood. Indoor air quality improves dramatically, reducing respiratory diseases that disproportionately affect women and children.

The initiative builds on successful pilot programs run across Nigeria's six geopolitical zones, where the government tested distribution methods and gathered feedback. Those lessons now inform a much larger deployment designed to reach the households that need it most.

Clean cooking might sound simple, but it transforms daily life. Mothers cook faster with better temperature control. Homes stay cleaner without soot coating walls and cookware. Children study without stinging eyes from smoke. Communities preserve forests instead of stripping them for fuel.

Nigeria's Decade of Gas Initiative sees this program as central to converting the nation's massive gas reserves into tangible improvements for ordinary citizens, not just export revenue or industrial fuel.

The free cylinder distribution represents a decisive shift toward energy justice, ensuring the people living above Nigeria's natural wealth can finally benefit from it in their own kitchens.
