Nigeria Launches National Push to End Lead Poisoning

Millions of Nigerian children are getting a fighting chance against an invisible threat that's been quietly damaging their brains and bodies for years.

Nigeria Health Watch and Resolve To Save Lives just launched Project Amplify, a year-long initiative designed to eliminate lead poisoning across the country. The toxic metal causes cardiovascular disease, kidney damage, reduced cognitive ability, and stunted growth in children, yet awareness remains dangerously low.

"Lead poisoning is a silent epidemic that continues to undermine the health and future potential of Nigerian children," said Habibat Ohunene Lawal, Project Manager at Nigeria Health Watch. The project aims to turn awareness into sustained action across the nation.

The timing couldn't be better. Nigeria recently unveiled its National Lead Elimination Policy and Five-Year Strategic Plan, showing serious government commitment to tackling the issue. A National Inter-Agency Working Group now coordinates efforts across health, environment, and regulatory agencies.

Over the next 12 months, the project will strengthen policy implementation, train health journalists to report accurately on the issue, and push to phase out lead in cosmetics and consumer products. The approach follows four phases: Explore, Co-create, Amplify, and Learn.

The initiative brings together an impressive coalition. National and sub-national stakeholders from health, environment, and agriculture sectors are joining forces with civil society organizations, community leaders, and major development partners including UNICEF and WHO.

When children grow up without lead poisoning, entire communities transform. Kids perform better in school, adults stay healthier and more productive, and healthcare systems save precious resources. By protecting young brains from toxic exposure, Nigeria is investing in a generation that can reach its full potential.

The project's multi-sector approach means solutions will stick. Training journalists ensures accurate public information, while engaging regulatory agencies guarantees enforcement power behind new policies.
