Nigeria Launches Tracker for 2027 Health Promises

Nigerian voters now have a powerful way to hold their leaders accountable for healthcare promises before, during, and after the 2027 elections.

Nigeria Health Watch unveiled its Health Manifesto Tracker this week in Abuja, a digital tool that will document and monitor every health commitment made by political candidates. The organization wants to ensure politicians can't make vague promises about healthcare and disappear after winning office.

The timing couldn't be more critical. Nigeria currently spends just 3.7% of its national budget on health, far below the 15% target that African governments pledged in 2001. State governments do slightly better at 5.2%, but even then, actual spending falls short of what's allocated.

The tracker will capture specific details about each promise, checking whether commitments are measurable and achievable. After elections, the team will use public government data and dashboards to verify whether politicians keep their word.

Solomon Oladimeji, who leads monitoring and evaluation at Nigeria Health Watch, pointed to one example of how tracking will work. The government promised to revitalize 17,000 primary healthcare centers, and the tracker will count exactly how many get completed.

Citizens can also submit feedback and questions about health commitments through the platform. This gives everyday Nigerians a direct voice in demanding accountability from those who seek to represent them.

The stakes are incredibly high for Nigerian families. "Most Nigerian families today are one illness away from a catastrophic financial situation," Oladimeji explained. High maternal and child mortality rates show the real cost of inadequate healthcare investment.

Vivianne Ihekweazu, managing director of Nigeria Health Watch, emphasized that health is fundamentally a political choice. Every decision about healthcare funding, medicine access, and health insurance directly affects people's lives.

The Ripple Effect

This tracker represents more than just better record keeping. It's part of a growing movement across Africa where citizens demand concrete action instead of empty campaign slogans.

Countries like Rwanda and Thailand have shown what's possible when governments make sustained commitments to healthcare. Nigeria Health Watch is betting that transparency and public pressure can push Nigerian leaders toward similar progress.

The organization isn't backing any particular party or candidate. Through its #Vote4HealthNaija campaign, it's simply asking voters to make healthcare a priority when choosing their leaders.

The message is clear: politicians who want votes need to show their work, and Nigerians will be checking the receipts.
