Nigeria Names Eguavoen Coach for Olympic Qualifying

Nigeria's football federation just handed the reins of its women's national team to a coach who knows what it takes to win on Africa's biggest stage.

Augustine Eguavoen, affectionately called "Cerezo," will lead the Super Falcons through their Olympic qualifying matches starting in October. He brings championship experience after guiding Nigeria's men's team to third place at the 2006 Africa Cup of Nations.

The interim appointment comes as Nigeria prepares to face Comoros in a crucial second-round qualifier. Both matches will take place at Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne-Remo on October 9 and 13.

Eguavoen won't work alone. Christopher Danjuma, who recently coached Nigeria's under-20 women's team at the World Cup in Costa Rica, joins as assistant coach. Former Super Falcons defender Ayisat Yusuf, who earned 68 caps and played in three World Cups for Nigeria, adds her expertise to the coaching staff.

The Super Falcons received a bye into the second round as one of Africa's three highest-ranked teams in the competition. They'll need to win four rounds of knockout matches to claim one of just two spots available for African teams at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.

Nigeria enters the qualifying campaign with serious credentials. The team has won the Women's Africa Cup of Nations a record 10 times, establishing itself as the continent's dominant force in women's football.
