Nigeria Offers Loans to Convert Cars to Cleaner Fuel

Getting off gasoline just became affordable for millions of Nigerian drivers who've watched fuel prices climb month after month.

Nigeria's Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas and Electric Vehicles just partnered with three major financial institutions to offer loans and credit guarantees for converting petrol and diesel vehicles to run on compressed natural gas (CNG). The program targets everyone from individual car owners to taxi drivers and delivery companies whose livelihoods depend on affordable transportation.

The deal brings together the Nigerian Consumer Credit Corporation, the National Credit Guarantee Company, and Moniepoint Microfinance Bank. Together, they'll provide financing that covers the upfront conversion costs that have kept most Nigerians from making the switch, even though CNG costs significantly less than gasoline at the pump.

Ismail Ahmed, who leads the initiative, explained the program rests on three foundations: availability, acceptability, and affordability. The government has been building conversion centers and CNG supply networks across the country. They've also focused on educating the public about the safety and reliability of natural gas vehicles.

But affordability remained the biggest barrier until now. Most drivers simply couldn't pay the full conversion cost upfront, no matter how much they'd save on fuel over time.

"With this partnership, ordinary Nigerians now have structured options to finance their CNG conversions through trusted credit channels backed by guarantee support," Ahmed said at the signing ceremony in Abuja.

The Ripple Effect

This financing program does more than just cut transportation costs for families and businesses. Every converted vehicle creates jobs at conversion centers, maintenance shops, and local manufacturing facilities that build CNG equipment.

The shift also strengthens Nigeria's energy independence while reducing the carbon emissions that come from millions of gasoline-powered vehicles. Commercial drivers who spend a huge portion of their income on fuel stand to benefit the most, potentially doubling their take-home pay by switching to cheaper natural gas.

The partner institutions confirmed they're ready to start processing applications. Representatives from all three organizations committed to making the loans accessible and the approval process straightforward, recognizing that transport costs affect every part of Nigeria's economy.
