Nigeria Opens World-Class Geoscience Center at UNILAG
A state-of-the-art geoscience research center just opened at the University of Lagos, built to train the next generation of Nigerian oil and gas professionals. The facility represents a major step toward developing homegrown expertise instead of relying on foreign specialists.
Nigeria just invested in something that could change its energy future forever: a world-class geoscience center that will train thousands of local students and researchers right at home.
Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company, alongside its partners and the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board, opened the cutting-edge facility at the University of Lagos on Friday. The center gives Nigerian students access to advanced equipment and training that previously required studying abroad or importing foreign experts.
Felix Omatsola Ogbe, Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board, explained that building local talent sits at the heart of Nigeria's economic strategy. Geosciences unlock the discovery of new oil and gas deposits, and this center will help Nigeria find and develop those resources using Nigerian expertise.
The timing couldn't be better. The Board plans to train 10,000 young Nigerians in critical oil and gas skills through its Field Readiness Training program, and the new UNILAG center will play a central role in that mission.
Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu emphasized why this matters beyond the energy sector. The knowledge and skills students develop here will apply to environmental management, infrastructure development, and other areas crucial to Nigeria's growth.

"Nigeria cannot continue to rely heavily on external expertise in critical sectors," Sanwo-Olu said through his Commissioner for Higher Education. "We must build our own capacity, train our own professionals, and develop our own solutions."
The Ripple Effect
This center represents more than just one university upgrading its facilities. It's part of a nationwide effort to strengthen technical education across Nigeria's universities and vocational schools.
Ronald Adams, Managing Director of SNEPCo, made clear this isn't just a Shell project. "This is not a Shell facility; it is a national asset," he said, inviting the entire energy community to partner with UNILAG, fund research, support student projects, and mentor emerging talent.
The facility will help Lagos strengthen its position as a hub for knowledge and innovation where young people don't just discuss ideas but develop them into real solutions. When students graduate with hands-on experience using world-class equipment, they enter the workforce confident and ready to contribute from day one.
For a country rich in natural resources, investing in the people who can responsibly discover and manage those resources makes perfect economic sense.
Nigeria is betting on its young people, and this center gives them the tools to succeed.
