Nigeria Partners China for Cancer Care Expansion

Nigeria is taking a bold step forward in the fight against cancer by partnering with China to dramatically expand access to life-saving treatment across the nation.

Health Minister Iziaq Salako announced the strategic cooperation agreement with LinaTech, a Chinese radiation therapy company, at the LINK Global Summit on Innovation and Practice in Oncology in Beijing. The partnership will bring advanced radiotherapy technology, professional training programs, and joint research opportunities to Nigeria.

The collaboration comes at a critical time. Nigeria recorded an estimated 127,763 new cancer cases and 79,542 deaths in 2022, with breast, prostate, and cervical cancers accounting for more than 40 percent of cancer deaths. But there's already progress to celebrate: the country's mortality-to-incidence ratio improved from 62.3 percent in 2022 to 59.6 percent in 2024.

Since May 2023, Nigeria has accelerated cancer interventions across prevention, awareness, early detection, and treatment. The government introduced the HPV vaccine into routine immunization in October 2023, reaching more than 14 million girls aged nine to 14 years. New screening initiatives are improving early detection and referral for treatment.

The partnership goes far beyond simply purchasing equipment. Nigeria plans to twin its cancer centers of excellence with Chinese cancer hospitals and establish a clinical training base to serve as a West African hub for advanced radiotherapy training. Nigerian radiation oncologists, medical physicists, and biomedical engineers will receive fellowship opportunities in China.

"Machines without people are monuments," Salako emphasized, stressing that trained personnel and sustainable technical support must back every piece of equipment installed. Nigeria's long-term goal is developing the capacity to install, maintain, and eventually manufacture cancer technologies locally.

The country is already building momentum. Three cancer centers of excellence have been completed and commissioned in Katsina, Enugu, and Benin, equipped with modern linear accelerators. President Bola Tinubu has approved the procurement of 35 additional linear accelerators between 2026 and 2028 to expand radiotherapy access further.

The Ripple Effect

This partnership represents more than a bilateral agreement between two nations. By establishing Nigeria as a West African training hub for advanced radiotherapy, the collaboration could benefit patients across the entire region. The technology transfer and local manufacturing plans could make life-saving cancer treatment more accessible and affordable throughout West Africa.

Nigeria's National Institute for Cancer Research and Treatment has already trained about 140 early-career cancer scientists and supported 24 research grants. The government has also created financial mechanisms including the National Cancer Access Programme and Social Determinants of Cancer Care Fund to help patients afford treatment.

By 2030, Nigeria aims to pursue local assembly and servicing of radiotherapy equipment, joint clinical trials, AI-assisted treatment planning, and tele-oncology collaborations. The government's zero-duty and zero-VAT incentives for health manufacturing create an enabling environment for investment in local production.
