Two government vehicles stolen at gunpoint in Nigeria's capital are back home thanks to a cross-border police operation that reached all the way to Burkina Faso.

Nigerian police working with INTERPOL successfully recovered a 2018 Lexus SUV and a 2025 Toyota Hilux that had been snatched from government offices in Abuja and smuggled across international borders. The vehicles belonged to the Office of the Special Adviser to the President on Energy and the Federal Capital Territory Primary Health Care Board.

The Lexus disappeared first on August 3, 2024, followed by the Toyota Hilux on February 20, 2025. Both were taken at gunpoint by members of a vehicle trafficking syndicate operating across Nigeria and the Sahel region.

After receiving assistance requests from the vehicle owners, INTERPOL's National Central Bureau in Abuja launched an international recovery effort. The operation required coordination between Nigerian and Burkinabe authorities, support from Nigeria's Attorney General, and help from the Nigerian Embassy in Burkina Faso.
