Nigeria Releases Regional Funds, Warns Against Waste

Nigeria's government is backing its regional development plans with real money and real accountability measures.

President Bola Tinubu directed officials to release all funds owed to regional development commissions during Monday's North Central Stakeholders Development Summit. The commissions were created to address long-standing development gaps in regions across the country.

The president made clear that funding comes with strict expectations. "The era of white elephant projects is over, and there is no excuse for the commission to become another conduit for wasting public funds," Tinubu said through his representative, Secretary George Akume.

The North Central region alone holds massive untapped potential in agriculture, food production, mineral resources and industrial development. Yet it has operated below capacity for years, leaving communities without the infrastructure and opportunities they deserve.

The commissions must focus on projects that directly benefit people, not prestige projects that look good on paper but deliver little. Priority areas include infrastructure, education, healthcare, human capital development and security improvements.

Tinubu warned that corruption, discrimination and politicization will result in immediate sanctions. The government established oversight through the Ministry of Regional Development and called on the National Assembly to monitor commission activities closely.

The Ripple Effect

This funding release could transform how regional development works in Nigeria. Rather than duplicate existing government functions, the commissions can fill specific gaps that federal, state and local authorities have struggled to address.

The North Central summit is developing a 20-year plan called "The Great Leap Forward" to guide the region's economic and social growth. Tinubu challenged participants to ensure the plan reflects real community needs and doesn't just gather dust on a shelf.

Secretary Akume encouraged commissions to explore partnerships with private companies, donors and development organizations to supplement government funding. This diversified approach could sustain projects long-term while reducing dependence on public coffers.

The government has already intensified security operations in the North Central region, recognizing that development requires peace and stability first.

Nigeria's regional commissions now have the funding and the mandate to prove that targeted development can close opportunity gaps and lift communities forward.
