Nigeria Seizes 10M Fake Malaria Drugs, Saves Millions

Nigeria's health watchdog just pulled off one of its biggest wins against criminals selling fake medicines that kill.

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) seized over 10 million doses of counterfeit malaria drugs worth N3 billion from a secret warehouse in Lagos. According to director Martin Iluyomade, the haul was large enough to kill three million Nigerians if it had reached store shelves.

Acting on a tip received February 3rd, investigators raided what appeared to be a spare parts warehouse at Trade Fair Market. Instead, they found a three-story building packed floor to ceiling with fake medications. Eight trucks were needed just to haul away the dangerous products.

The criminals had become experts at hiding in plain sight. They stored fake antibiotics, malaria injections, and drugs banned 15 years ago in places nobody would think to look. The counterfeits were so good that even legitimate manufacturers struggled to tell them apart from real medicines.

Four people were arrested during the operation, and investigators continue tracking down other members of what appears to be an organized criminal network. These weren't small-time operators. They had perfected their system over years of practice.
