Nigeria Sends 34 Female Nurses to Train in Germany

Thirty-four female nurses and midwives from Katsina State, Nigeria are heading to Germany for advanced medical training in a program that shows how investing in women's careers can transform healthcare back home.

The state government is covering everything. That includes eight months of German language classes in Abuja, exam fees, accommodation, and a monthly allowance of 50,000 naira (about $60 USD). The total investment so far has reached 100 million naira.

Health Commissioner Musa Adamu told the group they were selected on merit, with each woman representing her local government area. They'll start with intensive German classes at Koode Academy in Abuja before taking a language exam in Lagos.

The bar is set high. Each candidate must score at least B2 level on the German language test to qualify for a visa. Only those who pass move on to the specialized training in Germany.

Once in Germany, the nurses will learn critical skills including ICU care and life-saving techniques. Their Nigerian salaries will continue during training, and the German government will provide additional support while they study.

The Ripple Effect

This program does more than train nurses. It sends a message about the value of women's professional development in northern Nigeria, a region where female participation in advanced education often faces cultural barriers.

These 34 women will return with skills that could save countless lives in Katsina's hospitals and clinics. They'll train others, improve emergency care, and bring international standards to their communities. Each woman becomes a bridge between German medical innovation and Nigerian healthcare needs.

The investment also keeps talent at home. By funding education abroad with the expectation of return, Katsina is building its healthcare system from within rather than losing skilled workers to brain drain.

Assistant Director Muhammad Nuraddeen-Umar reminded the group they're ambassadors for their state and families. Permanent Secretary Lawal Rabe urged them to focus and work hard during the intensive program.
