When a patient died after surgery at Safe Hand's Maternity Clinic in Calabar, Nigeria, state officials didn't look away. They took action that could save countless lives.

The Cross River State Task Force on Health Quality shut down the illegal facility on Monday after discovering it was operating as a death trap. Investigators found a converted three-bedroom apartment masquerading as a proper medical center, with no licensed nurses and no legal permits.

Dr. Dan Abubakar, who leads the task force, expressed alarm at what his team uncovered. The so-called clinic had transformed a residential apartment into a six-bed maternity ward where unqualified staff performed surgeries in unsanitary conditions.

The facility's owner, Mrs. Inyang Ekeng, held credentials only as a Community Health Extension Officer, not to run a maternity clinic. A doctor from the local teaching hospital was conducting surgeries in an environment investigators described as completely unsuitable for medical procedures.

The inspection revealed multiple violations that put patients at serious risk. The clinic lacked proper ventilation, maintained no patient records, had no theatre documentation, and employed unqualified personnel to handle complex medical cases.

Officials even found a stroke patient abandoned at the facility, despite it having zero capacity to manage such serious conditions. The clinic was operating far beyond any approved scope, with inadequate consulting rooms and poor waste management systems threatening public health.

This shutdown represents more than closing one illegal clinic. Governor Bassey Otu's administration is investing heavily in renovating and constructing modern, properly equipped healthcare facilities across Cross River State.

The government's message rings clear: residents deserve access to safe, professional medical care in accredited centers. By eliminating healthcare fraud and quackery, officials are building trust in the system and protecting vulnerable patients from predatory operators.

Dr. Abubakar urged residents to seek treatment only at approved facilities rather than risk their lives with unqualified practitioners. The task force continues working to ensure every healthcare provider meets proper standards.
