Nigeria Stops Pirate Plot, Saves Oil Vessel and Crew

Nigeria's Department of State Services just prevented what could have been a devastating attack on maritime workers and their vessel in the Gulf of Guinea.

Agents arrested Geoffrey Atizara, 38, and Divine Kelechi Unueze, 42, at a hotel in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, on Saturday. The two men were reportedly finalizing plans to hijack a crude oil vessel, kidnap the crew, and steal the cargo.

Intelligence work led authorities to the suspects before they could act. According to security sources, Unueze was financing the operation while Atizara worked to recruit more pirates for the attack.

Both men have confessed to being part of a larger criminal network operating across southern Nigeria. Their arrests disrupted what officials called a major threat to maritime security in the region.
