Nigeria Trains 1,200 Youth in Tech, Fashion, Solar Skills

When 7,000 young Nigerians applied for just a handful of training spots in Abuja, the government knew they had struck gold. Now that pilot program is going nationwide, bringing free skills training and startup equipment to 1,200 young people across the country.

The National Poverty Reduction with Growth Strategy launched its first round in Abuja on June 30, 2025, teaching cybersecurity, web development, and solar energy installation over 10 intensive days. Graduates walked away with laptops and certificates, ready to put their new skills to work.

Dr. Abiola Arogundade, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Technical, Vocational and Entrepreneurship Education, says the program trusts that Nigerian youth aren't the problem but the solution. Each region will now host 200 trainees for programs tailored to local job markets and student interests.

Starting September 28, 2026, Oyo State in the South-West will offer graphics and AI design, makeup, and fashion design training. Enugu State in the South-East adds solar panel installation to the mix. Kebbi State in the North-West focuses on AI design, fashion, and dairy processing for small agribusinesses.

The equipment support sets this program apart from typical training courses. Graphics students receive laptops to take home. Fashion designers get sewing machines and starter kits. Makeup artists receive fully equipped professional kits. Agriculture trainees get fermentation equipment for yogurt production.

The Ripple Effect

This program forms part of Nigeria's ambitious goal to lift 100 million people out of poverty within 10 years. By giving young people both skills and tools, the government hopes graduates will create their own jobs and eventually hire others. One trained fashion designer with a sewing machine could become an employer within months.

The program seeks partnerships with state governments, traditional leaders, and private companies as it expands to more regions across Nigeria's six geopolitical zones.

For a country where youth unemployment remains a pressing challenge, 7,000 applications for one pilot program reveals the hunger for practical, marketable skills. Now 1,200 more young Nigerians will get their chance to build brighter futures.
