Nigeria Trains Experts in Satellite Forest Monitoring

Nigeria is equipping its environmental professionals with cutting-edge technology to save its threatened forests and wildlife.

Ogun State launched a specialized training program this week teaching officials how to use satellite imagery and geospatial software to track forest health and biodiversity. The initiative, backed by the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation and the Global Environment Facility, brings together experts from across Nigeria to learn tools like Collect Earth and Mapathon for real-time forest monitoring.

The timing couldn't be more critical. Nigeria's forests face mounting pressure from illegal logging, land encroachment, and climate change impacts that threaten ecosystems providing clean water, soil protection, and climate regulation for millions of people.

Forestry Commissioner Engr Taiwo Oludotun explained that reliable data is the foundation for protecting these vital resources. "This training is a strategic investment in human capacity," he said at the opening ceremony, noting that participants will gain practical skills in collecting and interpreting environmental data that can guide policy decisions.

The technology allows officials to spot deforestation patterns, identify biodiversity hotspots, and assess forest degradation from their computers using satellite images. This means faster response times to threats and more accurate reporting to international climate and biodiversity agreements.

Professor Segun Oladoye, the project's Chief Technical Advisor, emphasized that participants will learn to develop real solutions for workplace challenges. The program is part of a larger four-component initiative supporting environmental protection and community livelihoods across Nigeria.

The training represents more than just new software skills. Officials from Ondo, Edo, and Delta states traveled to participate, showing strong regional commitment to forest protection. These newly trained experts will return to their home states equipped to monitor thousands of hectares of forest, potentially stopping illegal activity before significant damage occurs.

The knowledge sharing between state and federal institutions also strengthens Nigeria's overall environmental governance. As officials learn to use the same monitoring systems, they can coordinate responses across state lines and share data more effectively.

Forest officer Orogun Ademola from Ondo State expressed enthusiasm about gaining updated knowledge on the latest geospatial technologies. His colleagues echoed appreciation for the practical, hands-on approach that will translate directly into better forest management.

This investment in human capacity shows how international partnerships can deliver tangible tools for environmental protection. When experts have the right technology and training, they can spot problems early and take action before forests disappear.
