Nigerian Agency Rescues 64 Trafficking Victims in 4 Years

🦸 Hero Alert

Nigeria's anti-trafficking agency has rescued 64 children and adults from human trafficking operations spanning Ghana and Libya since 2022. The agency is now taking prevention efforts directly into schools and communities across Ebonyi State.

Sixty-four people, including children, are back home safe after being rescued from human trafficking operations that stretched from Nigeria to Ghana and Libya.

The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) in Ebonyi State announced the rescues on Friday, representing four years of work to track down victims and arrest suspects. Commander Offor Berther shared that the agency arrested over 90 suspects connected to trafficking crimes during this period.

The rescued survivors had been trafficked both internationally and within Nigeria. Eight trafficking cases are currently moving through the courts, with 74 total cases investigated since the command's establishment.

The Ripple Effect

NAPTIP isn't just rescuing victims. They're working to stop trafficking before it starts.

The agency has visited 64 schools across Ebonyi State with anti-trafficking education programs. In 19 of those schools, they've established student groups called anti-trafficking vanguards and brigades, teaching young people to recognize danger signs and stay vigilant.

The grassroots approach extends beyond schools. NAPTIP has set up community watchdog groups in 24 neighborhoods, creating networks of residents who can spot suspicious activity and protect vulnerable people in their areas.

Commander Offor is asking landlords to require bank verification numbers, national ID numbers, and workplace identification from prospective tenants. She explained that traffickers often rent homes, kidnap neighbors' children within days, then disappear without a trace. Requiring proper identification could make those crimes much harder to pull off.

The agency needs support to expand its work. Offor appealed to the state government and private donors for vehicles and shelter facilities to better serve survivors who've escaped trafficking situations.

She reminded parents that staying actively involved in children's lives remains the first line of defense against traffickers who prey on vulnerable young people.

Every rescued person represents a life saved and a family reunited, but the real victory lies in the schools and communities now equipped to prevent trafficking before it happens.
