Nigerian Army Rescues Kidnapped Pastor in Enugu

A Nigerian pastor is safely home with his family after soldiers tracked down his kidnappers in a nighttime rescue operation that unfolded across rural Enugu State.

Reverend Johnson Onugwu was taken from his residence in Ezimo Community around 1:00 a.m. on January 29, 2026, when gunmen stormed his home in Udenu Local Government Area. Within hours, troops from the 82 Division of the Nigerian Army received intelligence about his location and began tracking the kidnappers through the region.

The soldiers followed the trail to Itabolo before catching up with the kidnappers in Okpakeke Community. A gun battle broke out when the troops moved in to rescue Reverend Onugwu.

One kidnapper was killed in the confrontation, while the clergyman emerged without injuries. Security forces recovered an AK-47 rifle, two magazines, and twenty rounds of ammunition from the scene.

The operation was part of Operation UDO KA, a joint security effort working across southeastern Nigeria under the Joint Task Force South East. Multiple agencies collaborated to share intelligence and coordinate the rescue.
