Nigerian Bishop: Leadership Is Influence, Not Office

A Catholic bishop's keynote speech at a memorial service has sparked hope for a new understanding of leadership in Nigeria.

Bishop Matthew Kukah of Sokoto Catholic Diocese told a distinguished gathering in Lagos that the nation's struggles stem from confusing leadership with political office. Speaking at the fifth anniversary memorial for Pastor Emily Aig-Imoukhuede on Monday, he delivered a message that resonated far beyond the ceremony itself.

"Leadership is not office," Kukah declared. "You can occupy an office without being a leader, and you can lead without holding any office."

The bishop's vision centers on influence and responsibility rather than power. He argued that true leadership must be measured by whom it serves and how much it promotes the common good, not by titles or positions held.

Drawing from history, religion, and global politics, Kukah emphasized that lasting institutions are built on moral foundations. He called for a return to integrity, accountability, and compassion in public life, warning against treating government positions as vehicles for personal gain.

Pastor Emily's life exemplified the servant leadership Kukah described. Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede, Chairman of Access Holdings and her son, shared how his mother answered four calls throughout her life: to serve God, family, country, and humanity.

"She believed that life was not meant to be lived for oneself alone," he said. "Every gift carried responsibility. Every opportunity carried an obligation."

The Ripple Effect

The event brought together influential Nigerians including banking pioneers, media publishers, and business leaders. But the gathering wasn't just about remembering one remarkable woman. It became a platform for reimagining what leadership could look like across the nation.

Kukah's message that "character is what you do when nobody is watching" offers a roadmap for change. By celebrating Pastor Emily's example of faith, humility, and concern for others, the memorial demonstrated that servant leadership isn't just theoretical.

Even in her later years, Pastor Emily remained hopeful about Nigeria's future despite its challenges. Her belief that the nation's best days lie ahead now inspires a new generation to lead through service rather than seek service through leadership.

The greatest inheritance isn't wealth but an example of purposeful living, Aig-Imoukhuede noted. His mother taught that success without service is empty and that life's true measure is what we contribute, not what we accumulate.

A movement toward values-based leadership might just be what Nigeria needs.
