Nigerian Candidate Concedes Election, Calls for Unity

Democracy won a quiet victory in Nigeria when a losing candidate put country before party and accepted his electoral defeat with grace.

Bola Oyebamiji, who ran for governor of Osun State under the All Progressives Congress party, publicly congratulated winner Ademola Adeleke on August 30th. Speaking to party members in Osogbo, the state capital, Oyebamiji acknowledged the election results and wished the governor success in his second term. Governor Adeleke won with 511,067 votes compared to Oyebamiji's 444,815 votes.

The concession came during the 35th anniversary of Osun State's creation, adding symbolic weight to the peaceful transfer of power. Oyebamiji's statement focused on moving forward rather than dwelling on loss, urging his party members to stay united and prepare for upcoming elections in 2027.

While accepting the results, Oyebamiji didn't shy away from addressing serious concerns. Election-related violence had claimed 29 lives in 73 separate incidents before voting day, with additional deaths occurring afterward. He called on Governor Adeleke to use his powers to protect all citizens regardless of political affiliation.
