Nigerian Designer Found Photoshop by Accident, Built Career

A laptop his father brought home by chance became the catalyst for Toheeb Popoola's creative awakening.

The Nigerian creative never planned to become a designer. His parents wanted him engineering, and he wanted mass communication. After getting rejected twice from his preferred program at the National Open University of Nigeria, Popoola accepted admission to study Business Management in 2013.

Then his family's finances took a difficult turn. Earning money became as urgent as getting a degree.

That's when his father arrived home with a laptop loaded with Adobe Photoshop 7.0, completely unaware of what the software could do. Popoola's curiosity got the better of him. He searched online to learn what Photoshop was, then started teaching himself through experimentation.

Internet access was limited and tutorials were hard to find, but Popoola kept practicing. His father noticed his growing interest and brought home more creative software, including Cinema 4D and 3ds Max. What started as random exploration turned into something deeper as Popoola experimented with motion design.

He found something unexpected in those long hours of self-teaching: a sense of purpose. "I think this was where I went from zero to 90," Popoola says. "I realised I want to be solving problems."

The young man who couldn't afford to start his business degree found a different kind of education entirely. Financial hardship, the very thing that threatened to derail his plans, actually opened a door he didn't know existed.

Popoola's story reminds us that detours don't always mean disaster. Sometimes the path we didn't choose leads somewhere better than we imagined. His father's accidental gift and his own willingness to explore the unknown transformed limitation into opportunity.

Today, when asked what he does, Popoola doesn't give a simple job title. "I like to just call myself a creative," he says, an identity born from curiosity, persistence, and one fortunate accident.

His journey from rejected student to self-taught designer proves that career paths rarely follow straight lines, and the best discoveries often happen when we're looking for something else entirely.
