Nigerian Doctors Return Home to Transform Healthcare

Dozens of Nigerian doctors who built successful careers overseas are now returning home with a mission: transform healthcare for millions of their fellow citizens.

President Bola Tinubu welcomed a delegation of diaspora medical associations to Abuja this week as part of Nigeria's 2026 National Diaspora Day celebration. The doctors have already conducted medical outreach programs across the country, providing specialist care, surgeries, and health education to thousands of Nigerians in underserved regions.

"I have been through that journey. I'm home now, and I can tell you there's nowhere like home," Tinubu told the visiting doctors, reflecting on his own decision to return to Nigeria after working with international firms like Deloitte and Mobil.

The president emphasized that Nigeria needs the knowledge and innovation of its skilled professionals abroad to build a resilient healthcare system. His administration is implementing reforms to strengthen primary healthcare, expand access to quality medical services, and reverse the trend of medical professionals leaving the country.

The returning doctors have already made their presence felt. Their recent medical outreaches spanned Nigeria's North-East, North-West, South-East, and South-West regions, bringing life-saving interventions to communities that rarely see specialist care.

Abike Dabiri-Erewa, CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, noted that these healthcare professionals were trained in Nigeria and succeeded abroad but felt called to give back. "Some of our people are leaving, but they're also coming back with knowledge and expertise to make Nigeria a better place," she said.
