Nigerian Festival Unites Christians and Traditional Faiths

Thousands gathered in Amagu community, Ebonyi State, Nigeria, for a remarkable celebration that transcends religious divisions. The Aji-Ereke Cultural Festival welcomes both Christians and traditional worshippers to dance, feast, and prepare for the farming season together.

The eight-day festival, held in April 2026, marks the end of the traditional calendar year in the Ikwo community. By ancient custom, no one may plant crops until the Aji-Ereke trumpet sounds, officially opening the new farming season.

Masquerades paraded through Amagu Erimogwudu playground as families exchanged gifts and reconciled differences. Traditional Ereke dancers performed alongside rhythmic drumming believed to honor ancestors and inspire farmers for the months ahead.

Governor Francis Nwifuru urged residents to preserve their cultural traditions in the face of globalization. He warned that communities risk losing their identity and future when they abandon their heritage.
