Nigerian Footballer Alex Iwobi Reaches 100th National Cap

Alex Iwobi is about to join one of the most exclusive clubs in African football, and he says choosing Nigeria over England was the best decision he ever made.

The 30-year-old Fulham midfielder will earn his 100th cap for Nigeria's Super Eagles on Wednesday in a friendly match against Portugal. Only three other Nigerian players have reached this milestone: Joseph Yobo, Vincent Enyeama, and Ahmed Musa.

Iwobi made his debut for Nigeria in October 2015 after representing England at youth levels. The decision wasn't easy, but he felt clear about where his heart belonged.

"I had represented England at youth level but always felt Nigeria was home," Iwobi said. "After 10 years and eight months, I won't say I am a legend. I only see myself as a Super Eagles player."

His most treasured moment in green and white came in 2017 when he scored the winning goal against Zambia that sent Nigeria to the 2018 World Cup. Both his parents were in the stadium in Uyo to witness it.

"I loved the occasion because my dad and my mum were both at the stadium and saw it all," he recalled. "We celebrated together afterwards."

Iwobi's journey shows what commitment looks like over the long haul. He's played through highs and lows, winning silver at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations and bronze medals in 2019 and 2025.

His father Chuka, a former footballer himself, told Nigeria's football federation that Alex has never wavered in his devotion. "No one can ever question his commitment, devotion and patriotism while wearing the green and white," he said.

The family remains grateful for every opportunity Nigeria has given their son. They hope this milestone is just another chapter in a story that continues to unfold.

For a player who chose love of country over convenience, Wednesday represents more than just a number.
