Nigerian Footballer's 24-Hour Call-Up Leads to Dream Debut

The 24-year-old defender was so excited he almost missed his flight to join the squad in Antalya, Turkey. "When I received the message at my club, I was so excited that I nearly missed my flight!" he told the Super Eagles media team.

Just 24 hours after getting the call, Nwaiwu sat on the bench watching Nigeria face Iran, a team that regularly qualifies for the World Cup. When teammate Igoh Ogbu went down with an injury early in the second half, the moment arrived faster than anyone expected.

Nwaiwu stepped onto the pitch for his first international appearance. He admits the nerves showed at first, holding the ball a fraction too long and adjusting to the pace. But by the final whistle of Nigeria's 2-1 victory, he had found his rhythm and helped secure the win.
