Nigerian Forces Rescue 16 Kidnapping Victims in Kogi

Sixteen people are safely back with their families tonight after Nigerian security forces rescued them from armed kidnappers in Kogi State.

The victims—six men, six women, and four children—were traveling along rural highways in Ofu Local Government Area on August 9 when armed men attacked their vehicles. Within hours, a coordinated search-and-rescue operation launched involving Nigerian Army troops, Navy personnel, police officers, and local vigilantes and hunters working together.

Intelligence reports helped the joint team track the kidnappers as they moved their captives toward Adumu in neighboring Dekina Local Government Area. When security forces caught up with the fleeing criminals, a firefight broke out.

The kidnappers abandoned all 16 captives and fled into the surrounding forest. Security forces believe several escaped with gunshot wounds.

All rescued victims are now undergoing medical assessment and documentation before reuniting with their families. One local hunter tragically lost his life during the operation, and a police officer was injured but is receiving treatment.

This rescue represents more than just one successful operation. It demonstrates what happens when different security groups and local communities work together with shared intelligence and coordinated action.

The same collaborative approach led to another rescue just one day earlier, when Kogi Police freed 15 kidnapping victims along the Itobe-Anyigba Highway. In July, this partnership model helped rescue a school principal, an education official, and two students abducted from an examination center.

Security forces have intensified patrols along highway corridors and forest areas where criminal groups previously found safe haven. The Nigerian Army credited the success to intelligence sharing between agencies and tips from vigilant residents who reported suspicious activities.

Local communities are stepping up too. Hunters and vigilantes who know the terrain intimately have become crucial partners in tracking criminals through dense forests and remote border areas.

The coordinated operations send a clear message: these highways and communities won't be surrendered to armed groups. While challenges remain in Kogi State, each successful rescue builds momentum for sustained security improvements.

Families separated by violence are being reunited, and the networks making it happen are growing stronger.
