Nigerian Governor Appoints First Sign Language Aide
Zamfara State now has its first Special Assistant dedicated to sign language interpretation, breaking barriers for deaf citizens. Governor Dauda Lawal made the historic appointment to ensure people with hearing impairments have equal access to government information.
Thousands of deaf Nigerians in Zamfara State just gained a direct voice in their government. Governor Dauda Lawal appointed Ibrahim Sani as Special Assistant on sign language interpretation, making him the first person to hold this position in the state.
The role isn't ceremonial. Sani will interpret at all government events and activities, ensuring that citizens with hearing impairments can fully participate in and understand what their government is doing.
"This is about inclusive governance," said Abubakar Mohammad Nakwada, Secretary to the Zamfara State Government. The appointment fulfills the state's Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities Prohibition Law, turning legal promises into real action.
Sani brings serious credentials to the job. He's a certified sign language interpreter with over ten years of experience teaching students with disabilities and advocating for inclusive education.
From 2015 to 2023, he served as Vice Principal of Academics at the School for Special Education in Gusau. He holds a degree in Special Education and Rehabilitation Science from the University of Jos and specialized training from the Federal College of Education in Oyo.

His leadership extends beyond the classroom. Sani chaired the Association of Sign Language Interpreters of Nigeria in Zamfara from 2018 to 2025 and now coordinates the organization's entire Northwest Zone.
The Ripple Effect
This appointment sends ripples far beyond one state office. When governments make accessibility a priority at the highest levels, it normalizes inclusion everywhere.
Other states across Nigeria may follow Zamfara's lead, creating similar positions. Schools, hospitals, and businesses might also recognize the value of professional sign language interpretation.
Most importantly, deaf citizens now see themselves represented in government structures. Young people with hearing impairments have a new role model showing them that their skills and voices matter in public service.
Governor Lawal expects Sani to use his expertise to guarantee that every person with hearing impairment has full access to information about government programs, services, and opportunities. When communication barriers fall, participation rises.
One appointment is opening doors for an entire community.
