Nigerian Governor Honored by UK University for Education Push

A Nigerian governor who dedicates a third of his state's budget to education just received a standing ovation at his old university in London.

Peter Mbah, governor of Enugu State, returned to the University of East London this week to accept an honorary Doctor of Law degree. More than two decades after graduating, he stood before students as proof of where education can lead.

Professor Fatima Ana-Diab reminded the ceremony that Mbah wasn't always a governor. As a law student in the late 1990s, he led the Students' Law Society to become the university's Most Productive Society of the Year and won the school's mooting competition.

After earning his law degree in 2000, Mbah returned to Nigeria and kept learning. He completed a master's in maritime law, earned an MBA in Spain, and studied strategy at Oxford.

He founded Pinnacle Oil and Gas, building it into a successful enterprise. Before becoming governor in May 2023, he served as Chief of Staff and Commissioner for Finance in Enugu State.

Today, Mbah leads millions of people with the same belief that got him through university: education unlocks possibilities. His administration now invests 33% of the state budget in schools, tech hubs, and skills training for young people.

"There will always be mornings when ambition alone will not get you out of bed," Mbah told graduates. "At those moments, it matters to have something that transcends self."

The university highlighted how he's moving education beyond traditional models. His programs aim to equip students with real-world skills for a changing global economy, not just textbooks and exams.

Professor Ana-Diab told current students that Mbah's journey offers a powerful lesson. Leadership isn't defined by titles but by what you do with the knowledge and opportunities you receive.

His work extends beyond classrooms to healthcare, infrastructure, and community development. He brings together law, business, and public service to pursue what he calls "economic and social progress" for everyday people.

"I have never been particularly interested in accepting the limits of my inherited circumstances," Mbah said. That willingness to disrupt, combined with purpose-driven service, shaped his path from student to governor.

For the graduates watching him accept his honorary degree, his message was clear: what you learn must somehow enlarge the possibilities available to others.
