Nigerian Governor Pays Residents Before Road Construction

Imagine getting paid fairly before your property is touched for a public project, not after years of legal battles.

That's exactly what's happening in Kaduna State, Nigeria, where Governor Uba Sani just distributed compensation checks to residents whose homes and businesses sit in the path of a new road connecting Kudan and Sabon Gari communities. The Hunkuyi–Unguwan Rimi–Basawa Road project will improve access to markets, schools, and hospitals across the region.

The compensation ceremony in Basawa came just two weeks after the state paid over N2 billion to roughly 1,000 residents affected by a separate flood control project. On that same day, families impacted by a 15-kilometer ring road construction also received their payments.

Governor Sani's administration has made pre-construction compensation standard policy across all major infrastructure projects. Every affected property undergoes transparent assessment to ensure fair payment before bulldozers arrive, not after.

"Development should never come at the expense of justice," Governor Sani explained through his representative. "No citizen should bear an unfair burden in the pursuit of public infrastructure."

The new road will create a vital link for farmers moving agricultural produce to market and boost commerce between the two local government areas. But unlike development projects that displace communities first and compensate later (if at all), Kaduna is flipping the script.
