Nigerian Legend Daddy Showkey Celebrates 50 Years on Stage

When Daddy Showkey took the stage at Lagos' Eko Hotels last Sunday night, he brought five decades of Nigerian music history with him.

The "Ghetto Soldier" opened his 50-year anniversary concert with his timeless hit "Move On," instantly bringing thousands of fans to their feet. What followed was a four-hour journey through the golden age of Nigerian music, featuring legends like 2Baba, Cobhams Asuquo, Teni, Tony Tetuila, and the iconic Danfo Drivers.

Cobhams Asuquo set the tone on keyboards at 9:40pm, warming up the crowd with Bob Marley's "One Love" before diving into Showkey's classics. The night became a reunion for fans who grew up when music was therapy and a force for change.

Showkey paused his performance to honor those who helped build his career. He invited Vanguard Media Limited's Saturday Editor, Onochie Anibeze, on stage to thank the newspaper for being the first to publish his story decades ago.

"I told myself one day Vanguard would write about me," Showkey recalled. "And true to that dream, Vanguard was the first newspaper to publish my story."

He also recognized veteran broadcaster Danladi Bako and the late Ogbonna Amadi, former Entertainment Editor of Vanguard, calling Amadi "a mentor who shaped me into the person people know today."

The Ripple Effect

The concert's most inspiring moment came when Showkey introduced his successors. A 13-year-old boy who's been following Showkey since age 4 performed skilled acrobatic displays, mirroring Showkey's own story of starting at age 6.

Another young talent named Wilson brought the house down by mimicking a rooster's crow, proving that Showkey's legacy extends beyond music to mentorship. The singer urged parents to document their children's talents and support their growth.

The stage transformed into a time machine when acts like Danfo Drivers performed their iconic anthem and Marvelous Benjy delivered a four-song set. Fans sang every word, dancing to songs that defined an era.

Showkey brought his two elder brothers on stage to share memories of his journey from the streets of Ajegunle to national stardom. His story of faith, consistency, and creating music with substance resonated through every performance.

The night proved that great music never dies, and that investing in the next generation keeps culture alive for another 50 years.
