Nigerian Midfielder, 21, Signs Until 2028 With Champions

A 21-year-old midfielder just signed with the reigning Nigerian Premier Football League champions, choosing his childhood dream over easier paths.

Ifeanyi Okechukwu officially joined Rangers International on a contract running through 2028. The Enugu-based club, fresh off winning the NPFL championship, beat out interest from Rivers United, Katsina United, and his former team Niger Tornadoes.

The decision wasn't easy. Okechukwu initially asked all interested clubs to wait, hoping for an opportunity to play in Europe after the season ended. But when it came time to choose, he turned to prayer and his heart gave him a clear answer.

"I asked God to lead me, and my heart chose Rangers," Okechukwu said. "It is one of the clubs I love. I have always wanted to wear the white and red jersey, so I could not say no."

The midfielder brings experience from three different NPFL clubs. His time at Enyimba, one of Africa's most successful clubs, taught him how to handle pressure. That lesson will serve him well at Rangers, where winning is now the baseline expectation.

Okechukwu isn't intimidated by the challenge. He laughs when asked about the pressure, explaining that a winning mentality is already built into how he thinks. He expects to play as an attacking midfielder, the number 10 position, under coach Fidelis Ilechukwu.

What stands out about Okechukwu's story isn't just the contract or the championship team. It's his approach to competition and growth at such a young age.

He knows he's not guaranteed a starting position, even though Rangers specifically recruited him. The club signed several quality players this season, and established midfielders from last year's championship squad are still in the lineup. Okechukwu welcomes that competition as normal and necessary.

"Nobody comes to a club as the automatic number one starter in his position," he said. "Everybody has to fight for his spot."

Rangers will compete in African continental tournaments this season alongside their domestic league defense. For Okechukwu, that means testing himself against some of Africa's best clubs. But he's not just excited to participate, he's confident about winning.

"It is not just about playing against them. It is about defeating them and showing that we are ready for that level," he said.

The young midfielder promises fans a mobile, creative player who will deliver assists and goals. His dream remains playing in Europe someday, but for now, he's focused on helping Rangers maintain their position at the top of Nigerian football.
