Nigerian Police Rescue Two Kidnap Victims, Arrest 3 Suspects

Two men walked out of a forest in southern Nigeria last week as free men, thanks to a carefully planned police operation that turned a ransom handoff into a rescue mission.

Officers from the Ondo State Police Command, working alongside local security personnel, rescued Owolabi Patrick and Asoto Dada after receiving intelligence that their captors planned to collect a ransom payment. The victims had been held in thick forest along the Ifira-Idoani axis.

The rescue unfolded late Friday night when security teams positioned themselves along the suspected route and waited. Around 11:30 p.m., four armed suspects emerged from the forest to collect the payment.

A brief exchange of gunfire erupted when the suspects spotted officers, but the security team quickly secured both victims without injury. The suspects fled back into the forest, though two sustained gunshot wounds to their legs during the encounter.

Police recovered approximately $950 in ransom money at the scene. Officers also seized a motorcycle that the victims later identified as being used in their abduction.

The Ripple Effect

The operation didn't end with the rescue. Police and Amotekun security personnel maintained their pursuit, using intelligence to track the fleeing suspects through the dense forest terrain.

Two days later, officers spotted and arrested three suspects along Idoani Road: Abdullahi Abubakar, Ibrahim Abubakar, and Oseni Abubakar, all from the Akunnu area. Both rescued victims later positively identified all three men as their captors.

The case has been transferred to the Special Anti-Kidnapping Squad in Akure to investigate the full criminal network. Commissioner Felix Ohagwu praised the coordinated effort between police, Amotekun forces, and local security groups.

This successful operation represents a growing trend of intelligence-led policing in Nigeria's southern states, where forest hideouts have become common refuges for criminal operations. The collaboration between formal police forces and community security networks like Amotekun and Agbe-Koya shows what's possible when law enforcement works hand-in-hand with local knowledge.
