Nigerian Record-Breaker Leads Stars to Glasgow 2026 Games

Just days after equaling Nigeria's 100m record with a blazing 9.84 seconds, sprinter Kayinsola Ajayi will carry momentum into the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games alongside reigning para powerlifting champion Folashade Oluwafemiayo.

Ajayi set his record-matching time at the London Diamond League on Saturday, setting up what promises to be an electric showdown with Kenya's defending champion Ferdinand Omanyala. The Nigerian star arrives in Glasgow as one of the fastest men in the Commonwealth.

Oluwafemiayo returns to defend the heavyweight para powerlifting title she won in Birmingham four years ago. The world record holder and multiple Paralympic champion led Nigeria to the top of the para powerlifting medals table in 2022, where the team collected four medals including one gold and two silver.

The Games begin July 23 with about 3,000 athletes from 74 Commonwealth nations competing for 215 gold medals across 10 sports and six para sports. Competition runs through August 2 in Scotland's largest city.

Nigeria will field competitors in para powerlifting, athletics, weightlifting, boxing and wrestling. The team aims to improve on previous performances after strong showings in Birmingham.
