Nigerian Rival Accepts Loss, Calls for Peace After Election

Two weeks after losing Nigeria's Osun State gubernatorial election, Bola Oyebamiji did something that's becoming increasingly rare in politics worldwide: he accepted defeat with grace and called for his supporters to unite.

Oyebamiji, who ran for governor on the All Progressives Congress ticket, lost to incumbent Governor Ademola Adeleke in the August 15 election. Rather than contest the results or fuel division, he publicly congratulated his opponent and urged his party members to move forward together.

"While we accept the outcome of the election and congratulate the winner, we cannot forget the painful incidents of violence and the lives that were lost," Oyebamiji said in his statement. The defeated candidate took time to thank President Bola Tinubu, former Governor Bisi Akande, and others who supported his campaign. He expressed gratitude to APC members for their "sacrifices, resilience, prayers and unwavering belief" in his vision for Osun State.

Oyebamiji made clear that his commitment to developing Osun hasn't ended just because the election did. He promised to continue working for the state's progress and to pursue legitimate concerns through lawful and constitutional means.

Governor Adeleke had already extended an olive branch after his victory, calling on all candidates to set aside their differences and support his administration. He described the election as a contest with "no victor, no vanquished," inviting cooperation rather than continued conflict.
