Nigerian School Gets Desks After Students Learned on Mats
Children at a rural Nigerian school spent years learning while sitting on mats on the floor. A youth fellowship program just gave them real desks, chairs, and whiteboards to transform their classroom.
Students at Migrant Farmers Nursery and Primary School in Abia State, Nigeria, no longer have to sit on mats during class thanks to a donation from young graduates working to improve their communities.
The Nigeria Jubilee Fellows Programme delivered chairs, tables, whiteboards, markers and dusters to the rural school in Aroayama Ndioru in early August 2026. The fellows, recent graduates gaining work experience while serving their communities, chose this school after visiting several and finding it in the most urgent need.
"Our pupils used mats for learning, but your donation of chairs and tables has made the learning environment more conducive," said headmistress Nwamaka Jonathan. She called the timing perfect, as the school had been struggling without basic furniture.
The fellowship program, funded by the European Union and United Nations Development Programme, trains young Nigerians in employable skills while encouraging them to give back. Fellows identify community needs and work to address them with available resources.
Matthew Ayantola, the program's coordinator for Abia State, explained their approach. "We look at our communities, identify their needs, and in our own little way contribute to solving those needs," he said during the presentation ceremony.
The Ripple Effect
The donation reaches beyond one classroom. Dr. Paul Udensi, the local education secretary, revealed that many schools in the area lack basic furniture and infrastructure. He's now calling on more organizations and businesses to support educational improvements across the region.
The state government has taken notice. Officials promised that renovations for Migrant Farmers Nursery and Primary School will begin soon, building on the momentum created by the fellows' donation.
The fellowship program operates across five local government areas in Abia State, connecting educated young people with communities that need support. Each project gives fellows real work experience while addressing gaps in public services.
Young graduates across Nigeria now have proof that small actions create real change for children who deserve better learning conditions.
