Nigerian Sheikh Calls for Unity Across Faiths

A Nigerian Islamic leader is using his platform to build bridges after recent controversy threatened to divide communities along religious lines.

Sheikh Sani Yahaya Jingir, who chairs the Islamic organization JIBWIS, faced criticism after comments he made at a government wedding ceremony were interpreted as hostile toward Christians. Speaking Sunday at a national symposium on unity in Jos, he firmly denied the accusations.

"A lot of people are saying I dislike Christians. It is a lie," Jingir told attendees. He explained that Islam teaches Muslims to share love with people of all faiths and warned that Muslims would be held accountable for any injustice committed against non-Muslims.

The sheikh pointed to Prophet Muhammad's example of living peacefully alongside people of other religions. He emphasized that Islamic leadership requires treating people fairly regardless of their beliefs.

Jingir extended his message beyond religious harmony to political leadership. He called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and state governors to lead with fairness for all Nigerians, whether Muslim or Christian, and regardless of political affiliation.

"You should lead with justice and fairness to all Nigerians," he said. The cleric stressed that every Nigerian deserves the right to freely choose their political candidates without discrimination.
