Nigerian Sprinter Olatunde Debuts for Iowa This Friday

When Olaolu Olatunde steps onto the track at the New Mexico Collegiate Classic this Friday, he'll be running for a new team but carrying the same blazing speed that made him one of Africa's fastest sprinters in 2025.

The 23-year-old Nigerian athlete will make his competitive debut for the University of Iowa after transferring from Harding University. He's entered in both the 60-meter and 200-meter events at the meet in the United States.

Olatunde hasn't raced since August 2025, when he won his first senior international gold medal for Nigeria at the CAF Region II Championships in Accra. He crossed the finish line in 10.60 seconds to claim the 100-meter title, capping off a breakthrough season.

Just months earlier, he had clocked a personal best of 10.13 seconds at the SWAC 8 pre-national championships in Abeokuta, Nigeria. That performance placed him among the fastest Nigerian and African sprinters of the year.

Before leaving Harding University, Olatunde made his mark in the record books. He shattered the school's longstanding sprint records with times of 10.14 seconds in the 100 meters and 20.65 seconds in the 200 meters last May, performances that earned him Harding's most valuable athlete award.

The New Mexico Collegiate Classic will feature several other Nigerian athletes competing across sprint and middle-distance events. Success Umukoro, national champion Chioma Nwachukwu, Faith Osamuyi, and Samuel Ogazi are among those scheduled to compete.
