Digital payment platform interface showing cross-border transaction capabilities for African markets

Nigerian Startup Chimoney Saved After Shutdown Crisis

Faith Restored

Five months after running out of money and shutting down, Nigerian payments startup Chimoney just got acquired and is back in business. Every investor got paid back in full, and the company is now processing payments again under new ownership.

A Nigerian fintech startup that appeared dead in the water has come roaring back to life, bringing hope to its investors, employees, and customers who depend on its services.

Chimoney, a Techstars-backed payments platform, shut down in May after running out of capital to keep operations running. The company stopped processing transactions and began the painful process of refunding customer balances, leaving businesses without a crucial payment provider.

But in an unexpected turn, CapitalSage Holdings swooped in just four weeks later with an acquisition offer. This week, founder Uchi Uchibeke confirmed the deal is complete, with 31 investors and team members receiving their payments in full.

The all-cash acquisition brings Chimoney's payment infrastructure back online, now accepting new clients and processing transactions across multiple currencies. The company's consumer app has relaunched as Tiki, a remittance service connecting people in Canada and the UK to family and friends across Africa.

Before its troubles, Chimoney had built impressive technology that enabled payments across 41 currencies and secured important regulatory approvals in Canada. The problem wasn't the product but growth and liquidity, according to Uchibeke.

"The biggest issue was distribution, but also related to that is liquidity," he explained in July. The company would have needed about $3 million to reach its growth goals, but revenue from existing clients couldn't sustain operations.

The Bright Side

This acquisition represents more than just one company's survival. It shows how strategic partnerships can rescue promising technology that might otherwise disappear. CapitalSage gets access to Canadian payment infrastructure and regulatory licenses that would take years to build from scratch. Chimoney's technology lives on, serving the businesses that depend on it.

The deal also protected everyone involved financially. All five team members received job offers, and even former employees who were shareholders in a company Chimoney had acquired benefited from the transaction.

Uchibeke is moving on to build APort, a new startup focused on authorization infrastructure for AI agents, bringing his payment systems expertise to emerging technology challenges. Meanwhile, Chimoney continues under leadership that has the resources to fulfill its original promise of seamless cross-border payments.

Sometimes the best second act comes from joining forces with someone who believes in your vision and has the means to make it happen.
